When buying laser safety glasses / goggles, be sure to select the laser glasses that blocks or atenuates the appropriate wavelength range and OD (Optical Density). The operating parameters of your laser, or a Certified Laser Safety Officer (LSO), will determine what laser safety glasses you should use. If you do not have a LSO on staff or related information in your laser manual, please contact us and our laser safety experts will help you. We engrave our laser glasses and goggles to ensure that specifications are permanent, and do not rub off like other suppliers. All our laser glasses meet or exceed GJB1762-93 requirements for use with lasers.

What does OD mean?

Optical Density (OD) is a measurement of the extent to which a substance (here the glasses) transmits certain wavelength(es) of light or other electromagnetic radiation. It measures from 1+ - 7+.

• OD1+: means 10% of certain wavelength(es) of laser light can penetrate the glasses.
• OD2+: 1%
• OD3+: 0.1%
• OD4+: 0.001%
• OD5+: 0.0001%
• OD6+: 0.00001%
• OD7+: 0.000001%

What does Visible Light Transmission (V.L.T.) mean?

The VLT value is the percentage of visible light that can travel through the glasses, the higher the value is, the better visual you get. Since our laser glasses are designed to absort the stated wavelength(es) to protect your eyes, the OD level for such absorption will effect the VLT result. Our design is at the perfect balance to protect your eyes, and the same time, to provide you with a clear visibility.

What Certification do you hold?

Our glasses have passed tests at: US AN1 Z136.1.3 and Z78.1; Canada CSA Z368; Europe EN207/EN208. It is very safe to use. \

Facts About Laser Eye Protection

Light Transmission and Optical Density

The term Light Transmission in regards to a lens can have two meanings. Generally we mean the percentage of visible light that penetrates a lens. For a normal pair of safety spectacles or prescription glasses the Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is about 85%. Laser filter lenses have some absorbers added, that change to color and the VLT of the lens. It is usually desirable to maintain a VLT as high as possible, but there are situations when both the laser light and the visible light has to be attenuated.

When we discuss the light transmission of a specific laser wavelength, it is under normal circumstances our ambition to filter out as much as possible of that specific wavelength. The ability of a lens to filter out a specific wavelength or wavelength range is called its Optical Density.
